PTOs and PTAs in Colorado may soon get a break from what a state representative called the "big blue tax monster."
Rep. Joe Rice, D-Littleton, said Sunday that he will introduce a bill today to exempt fund-raisers such as bake sales and silent auctions from sales tax. In addition, the bill would require vendors to file paperwork on prepackaged sales, such as wrapping paper, instead of leaving that responsibility with the PTA and PTO.

The problem with this bill is that the only organizations that will get this exemption are PTO’s and PTA organizations. It is not fair for government to use the tax system to reward and punish organizations they like/dislike. This bill would be a much improved bill if it did not specify one type of organization that gets to be allowed to avoid the tax tyranny.
