COLORADO SPRINGS — The City Council might ask the federal government to remove the Preble's meadow jumping mouse from the threatened-species list.
"I'm not opposed to the mouse. But the fact of the matter is the mouse is costing this community hundreds of millions of dollars," Colorado Springs Councilman Tom Gallagher said.
I find it rather funny, in a sad sort of way that the city government is having to struggle so much with the federal bureaucracy over this mouse. It seems like this should be a slam dunk case and be easy to remove off of the protected species list, however, as with all government programs, nothing is as easy as proving your case and calling it good. It may take years for the federal bureaucrats to remove the mouse from the list. By which time the development that may have been attractive in the year 2000 is no longer attractive by the time 2010 rolls around. The city is bemoaning the loss of development, but it may already be too late to recover many of those projects.
