I was listening to “the Libertarian Solution” podcast the other day, catching up a bit. When they started discussing Obama and his birth certificate. Right now Obama has intentionally withheld the release of the long form birth certificate and the birth announcement. He has ordered the hospital he was born in to not release his birth certificate. Of course the guys at the Libertarian Solution ask the question “why doesn’t he just release the birth certificate and end the controversy?”.
The answer is simple. Some very politically savvy person realized during the campaign that this “Birther” conspiracy was not a very popular issue with most of America, but was a huge issue for some of Obama’s most vocal critics. So by withholding the birth certificate he can keep this “controversy” alive. He does this in order to discredit his opponents.
What you will see is that if one of these talking heads on the radio or on TV gets an “average Joe” type of person (they won’t do this with a polished politician because it won’t work) who is against some policy of Obama’s, they won’t ask the person about their opposition to bailouts, or government healthcare, or whatever the issue is, instead they will ask about Obama’s place of birth. If you have fallen for this birther conspiracy and you answer this question in anyway that shows you don’t think Obama was born in the USA, your point of view on whatever issue at hand no longer matters, you are a kook from that point forward.
It is an old technique used by the political elite to discredit the opposition, a good example of this technique used in a slightly different way was when Ron Paul first appeared on the Bill Mahar show and Bill only harped on Ron Paul’s belief that slavery could have been ended even without a war between the states, and did not ask anything relevant to current events. When Ross Perot ran for president at some point the questions all became about black panthers and photoshopped pictures of his daughters and were no longer about any current issues.
Here is an example of this technique used in practice, luckily William Kostric did not take the bait:
