The LPCO mourns the loss of Dave Meleney
It is my sad duty to report that a friend of the Libertarian Party of Colorado, Dave Meleney died Thursday. He was electrocuted while trimming a tree.
A funeral service will be held next Saturday, July 21st, in Deer Creek Canyon Park (south west of Denver near Wadsworth and C-470) at 5 p.m. with food at Dave's mom's home afterwards. For details on attending the funeral, contact Frank Atwood at 720/260-1493.
Can I ask if this is the Dave Meleney who is also a Bonsai enthusiast? He has been a regular commenter on my weblog, and I was shocked to come across this note as I very much enjoyed our conversations and felt I had come to know him - he left a comment just last Wednesday. I'd be grateful if someone could let me know at gmail.com, user name slee.tom.

Tom, I am sorry to inform you it is the same gentleman. I sent you an email. I was not close to Dave and so it took a couple of days for me to confirm that our LP activist Dave was also a bonsai fan, but it is the same man.

Thanks for the note. I did not know Dave well, but we corresponded over the last year and very much appreciated his thoughtfulness and obvious good heart. My condolences to his family. I posted a short appreciation at http://whimsley.typepad.com/whimsley/2007/07/dave-meleney.html

This is very sad news. Dave telephoned me at the Independent Institute many years ago to thank me for my "heroic" work on loosening FDA regulations. My work was hardly heroic of course but you can imagine what a thrill it was to have someone call you out of the blue with kind words. Obviously, I have never forgotten. Not many people would make a call like that.
When Tyler Cowen and I started Marginal Revoution, Dave became a regular commentator and he would send me links and short notices. His comments were always intelligent, good hearted and polite - all unusual qualities in the blogosphere.
Today more than ever, no man is an island.

I just found out about this today - 2/22/08.
It sucks. Dave's sister and broter-in-law are old friends of mine and they told me.
I really respected Dave.
